The Northwest Art Center in Minot, ND announces a call to artists for a juried art exhibition, October 10 – November 23, 2024. Cash and Purchase Awards: five Merit Awards and one Best of Show. Best of Show earns a future solo exhibition and an invitation to the Best of the Best exhibit. Juror: Catherine Graffam. Original works in any medium, traditional or experimental, including photographs, qualify. Work must have been completed within the last two years and not previously exhibited in an INT’L exhibition. Snapshot America: A Portrait of the United States in 2024
The Rhode Island Center for Photographic Arts in Providence is looking to take a snapshot of America today for a gallery exhibition and book to document these unique times we live in. From Main Street to your back yard, everyday activities to the grand celebrations and the tragedies that touch us all, we want to see what your America looks like. What image defines present day America for you? What best represents the city or town you live in? What gives you the strength to get up in the morning? What keeps you up at night? Images should fall within the broad genre of “street photography,” meaning they should lean to the candid, straight out of camera approach and not be digitally manipulated beyond commonly accepted journalistic standards. $25 entry fee. Día de Muertos Oaxaca Art + Culture Workshop: watercolor, group altar, sand tapestry (October 26 – November 4, 2024)
Experience a hands-on deep dive into the authentic, hauntingly beautiful traditions of Day of the Dead in magical Oaxaca. We’ll paint imagery to honor the memories of your loved ones, visit a local market to find altar decorations and offerings, assemble a beautiful group altar (with photos of your dearly departed), and construct and decorate a traditional sand tapestry. Visit two cemeteries where Oaxaqueños lovingly adorn the graves of their ancestors and bring offerings to share with their spirits. Participate in a comparsa – the traditional Muertos parade. Field trips include artisan studio visits: tapetes (woven wool rugs) alebrijes (carved wooden objects) and a women’s red clay collective, who will invite us to see their own gorgeous Muertos altar. Kristy Kutch has been creating colored pencil art for almost thirty years and has been teaching colored pencil workshops since 1991. A teacher with a life license, she applies many basic learning principles to her workshops, enthusiastically meeting each student at the appropriate level. Beginners are always welcome, but even advanced artists benefit from Kristy’s instruction. Offering demonstrations of techniques and the characteristics of different types of colored pencils, papers, and other related materials, Kristy covers a wide range of possibilities.
