The Rhode Island Center for Photographic Arts in Providence is looking to take a snapshot of America today for a gallery exhibition and book to document these unique times we live in. From Main Street to your back yard, everyday activities to the grand celebrations and the tragedies that touch us all, we want to see what your America looks like. What image defines present day America for you? What best represents the city or town you live in? What gives you the strength to get up in the morning? What keeps you up at night? Día de Muertos Oaxaca Art + Culture Workshop: watercolor, group altar, sand tapestry (October 26 – November 4, 2024)

Experience a hands-on deep dive into the authentic, hauntingly beautiful traditions of Day of the Dead in magical Oaxaca. We’ll paint imagery to honor the memories of your loved ones, visit a local market to find altar decorations and offerings, assemble a beautiful group altar (with photos of your dearly departed), and construct and decorate a traditional sand tapestry. Visit two cemeteries where Oaxaqueños lovingly adorn the graves of their ancestors and bring offerings to share with their spirits. Participate in a comparsa – the traditional Muertos parade. Field trips include artisan studio visits: tapetes (woven wool rugs) alebrijes (carved wooden objects) and a women’s red clay collective, who will invite us to see their own gorgeous Muertos altar.
