Basics of Digital Photography

Today’s digital cameras offer endless creative opportunities—but only if you know how to use them. Whether you recently acquired your first digital SLR camera or mirrorless camera, or have owned one for a few years, this workshop empowers you to take control of its features and advance your skills.

Designed like a hands-on user manual, this workshop provides you with the knowledge essential to explore all the capabilities of your digital camera. Jennifer patiently guides participants through the variables of aperture, shutter speed, and the various settings and shooting modes. We learn how to incorporate these tools with different lenses, and explore techniques of composition and lighting in order to create more interesting and powerful images. Mornings are devoted to lectures, discussions, and critiques of the previous day’s work, while afternoons are spent practicing newly acquired skills in the picturesque environs of Santa Fe.

This promises to be an exciting five days of mastering the basics of digital photography and cultivating our creativity in an energetic and supportive atmosphere. By the workshop’s end, participants have acquired a solid understanding of manual mode on their camera, and return home with a collection of images that reflect their new expertise.

Adobe Lightroom Intensive: Organizing and Enhancing Your Images

Adobe Lightroom is the ultimate solution for the organization and enhancement of our digital imagery and an incredibly powerful tool for photographers of all levels. In this two day intensive you learn the ins-and-outs of proper Lightroom workflow and the tools that best fit your needs. The goal is strengthening and streamlining your photographic output—simplicity is key!

Luke begins by explaining how Lightroom handles files, then takes us through importing and organizing image files from our cameras and hard drives. Lightroom’s powerful organizational tools make it possible to sort through thousands of images with ease, and a principal goal of this workshop is to teach you how to navigate this essential element of the program. Using Lightroom’s system of Collections, Keywords, Flags, Stars, and Color Labels, you gain a solid understanding of how to simply manage photographs stored on your home computers and hard drives.

From organization, we move onto Lightroom’s powerful developing tools. Using the Develop module, we make adjustments ranging from correcting exposure to creative vignetting, in order to enhance the quality of our images. Luke also demonstrates how to synchronize your Develop settings across groups of images in order to streamline your workflow. We wrap up by learning how to export images for print or web viewing.

After a quick review of the skills that were covered, you’re equipped to get the most out of your digital images using Adobe Lightroom at home.

A powerful eruption illuminates the slopes of Mexico’s Colima Volcano on December 13, 2015. I was in the town of Comala when I suddenly saw incandescence above the volcano’s crater and started shooting. Seconds later, a powerful volcanic explosion expelled a cloud of ash particles and a massive lightning bolt illuminated most of the dark scene. It was one of the most exciting moments of my life. – Sergio Tapiro Velasco

My dad and I traveled to Patagonia earlier this year, and we wanted to see something off the beaten path. After a 10-hour drive and traversing a long, dirt trail, we finally came upon the marble caves. We chartered a boat to take us closer, and I waited for the perfect light to capture these intricate blue swirls. The extra effort it took to reach the caves was worth it. – Clane Gessel

In a remote village in the Tamba region of Japan, twinkling fireflies light up the Forest of the Gods on a summer evening. The fireflies carpet a stairway leading to a small shrine revered by the local people, creating a magical atmosphere.

Mount Bromo is a small but active volcano on East Java, Indonesia. On January 17, 2016, I was nearby when an increase in seismic activity triggered an alert. This photo was taken from the patio of a local hotel, where I was waiting with my camera. Just as the volcano erupted, the ashes seemed to glow with light. This photo is very special to me—a rare eruption of Mount Bromo with excellent lighting. – Reynold Dewantara

Topographies – Group Photography Exhibition

The Midwest Center for Photography in Wichita, Kansas seeks entries for a juried photography exhibition, September 29 – October 13, 2017. Juror: Linda Robinson, Gallery Director, MWCP. Topographies explores the notion of place and one’s connection to a particular environment. The photographic works presented in this exhibition can range from a detailed exploration of a particular location to a visual documentation of one’s personal interaction with their surroundings. The act of observing exterior or interior space through capturing the visual qualities of a location portrays a sense of visual mapping. As topographies encompass many different ways of describing and documenting location, from the physical landscape of a terrain to the in-depth history related to a geographic region, the works presented in this exhibition will represent what it means to examine topographically with the medium of photography.
