4heads presents

Governors Island Art Fair 2017

The 10th annual Governors Island Art Fair – New York’s largest independent exhibition – opens Saturday, September 2nd, featuring 100 artists in 100 individual spaces – located in and outside of the grand, historic homes on Colonels Row and this year, for the first time ever, in the long-shuttered spaces inside of Liggett Hall. These landmark structures display varying effects of the ravages of time, providing artists with a fertile environment for creative experimentation.

“Gems among the ruins” (The New York Times)
“It’s a lot to absorb, so… go early” (The New York Post)
“A welcome, art-filled escape” (Artnet.com)
“One of NYC’s best art fairs” (Time Out New York)

4headed Pioneers

When 4heads launched GIAF in 2008, this small group of artists were among the first to see Governors Island as an overlooked gem. In fact at that time, most New Yorkers had no idea what the island was, much less where to spot it on a map. Ten years later Governors Island is a standard part of the New York vernacular, and 4heads still remains committed to activating these sites every season, giving voice to today’s working artists and to the history of our great city.

Opening Saturday Sept 3rd – GIAF 2016
Over 100 artists exhibiting in the historic prison cells of Castle Williams, the caverns of Fort Jay, and the officers homes of Colonels Row, on Governors Island, New York Harbor

4heads presents

Governors Island Art Fair 2016

The ninth edition of GIAF will expand this September to include new installations at Castle Williams, a historic defense structure on Governors Island. A selection of artists will install works in eight of the massive building’s casemates – which later served as military prison cells – marking the first time ever that art will be featured in these spaces. This expansion of GIAF builds on last year’s use by 4heads of the underground munitions chambers at Fort Jay, driving their mission to enliven historic locations throughout the city with relevant, contemporary art. GIAF will open to the public on September 3rd —and remain open every weekend throughout the month—presenting the work of over 100 artists, from the U.S. and abroad, across Castle Williams, Colonels Row, and Fort Jay, as well as many designated outdoor locations. Don’t miss the annual island kick-off of the New York art season!

GIAF – New York’s largest independent exhibition – will once again feature one hundred artists of exceptional talent, each awarded an exhibition room or large outdoor space in the historic and beautifully dilapidated buildings of Colonels Row. The lines between artwork and its environment are blurred across the lawns and landmark houses of bucolic Governors Island. Founded by 4heads, a group of New York artists, GIAF champions a new art fair model that puts the artists first.
Once selected by the 4heads jury, your exhibition space is free. The entire massive event is free to the general public. And as an emerging or established artist, you are free to present your work, your way, at this acclaimed independent art fair in New York City.
