Best of TV 2019

12.26.19 Good Evening! We have reached the end of the best of 2019. I’ve watched some great tv shows this year, not a whole lot, but some shows grabbed my attention, like Stranger Things, The Crown, The Mandalorian, Game of Thrones, and The Deuce, oh and Big Little Lies. That is my small list, but here is a bigger list courtesy of Noel Murray of Polygon. Credit source: Polygon The best TV shows of 2019 Time to play catch up By Noel Murray   TheseThese days, even the most avid TV watcher can’t keep up with everything that’s acclaimed or award-winning. Some excellent, idiosyncratic shows aired outstanding seasons in 2019, yet barely made a ripple in the larger culture. The bawdy baseball comedy Brockmire, the cockeyed showbiz satire The Other Two, the melancholy homecoming dramedy Back to Life … these series and many more have yet to find the audiences they deserve. Even when critics beat the drum for them, the sound tends to get absorbed by an ever-increasing din of hype. And with new high-profile subscription streaming services launching this …

12.26.19 Read any good books lately this year? Well according to Molly Young from Vulture, these 10 reads must be really good. I found the article so interesting, I had to share it with you. By Molly Young   10. Doxology by Nell Zink Doxology It’s acidic, it’s absorbing, and it’s chunky enough to provide a bulwark against unwanted conversations with people you’re obligated to see during the holiday season. $20 at Amazon 9. Machines Like Me by Ian McEwan Machines Like Me The only time I think about cryonics is when my mind turns to the few dozen people (Iris Murdoch, Shakespeare, Goethe, etc.) whose brains I wish were still available so they could comment on modern moral dilemmas such as climate-change denial, privacy, animal rights, and AI. Luckily there is Ian McEwan, who is alive, operating at a normal temperature, and writing what I can only describe as literary …

Best of Theater 2019

12.21.19 We are continuing our best of 2019 with theater. West End theater in London or Broadway in NYC, there are always good theater performances to choose from. Unfortunately, I didn’t have the time to really see a play. Hopefully in the year 2020 that will change. The Hollywood Reporter and Time have their list of great theater performances. Credit source: The Hollywood Reporter & Time The Best New York Theater of 2019 by David Rooney The Hollywood Reporter chief theater critic’s top 10 includes formally inventive reflections on racial identity, illuminating revivals that found new shadings in familiar works, a peerless solo show and a kickass concert that doubles as a cure-all elixir. Clockwise from top left: ‘Slave Play,’ ‘Fiddler on the Roof,’ ‘The Lehman Trilogy,’ ‘Fleabag,’ ‘American Utopia’ and ‘Fairview’ Courtesy Photos It’s been a sleepy fall on Broadway, with few real surprises to galvanize the 2019-20 theater season. But enough strong holdovers from the spring nonetheless made it tough to carve out a list of just ten standouts. The majority of the more …
