Power of Pastel (September 22 & 24, October 8 & 9, or November 3 & 5)

Build a portrait along with Christine over two days using her 5-layer approach. Day 1 includes learning the system of finding a likeness for a portrait quickly. Then the afternoon will focus on Light- understanding it, seeing it and painting it – how light acts across the complex topography of the head. Day 2 focuses on understanding the pastel medium. Know when to use which brand. Know which pastels play nice with each other and which do not. The portrait started on Day 1 will be brought to completion on this day. Janet Rogers Expressive Watercolors – Flowers, Faces and Figures (Nov. 1-4, 2021 9am-4pm)

Fresh flowers in the studio will be the inspiration for the beginning of this dynamic workshop – progressing to faces and figures. Janet paints in a direct, intuitive and impressionistic manner. She will bring photos of hers – and/or you can work with your own. Focus will be on exploring color with flowers. Through a series of painting exercises students learn how to express translucent flesh tones, while emphasizing movement and gesture and an opportunity to be more spontaneous and expressive in their paintings of flowers and portraits.
