Bookgardan: A Year’s Sustenance for Writers
Keene, New York, United States
A 12-month, low-residency book cultivation program of sustained individual mentorship and ongoing small-group interaction online, bracketed by two week-long residencies.
Bring your book project to full fruition in Bookgardan, a year-long program of intensive, one-on-one literary mentorship and supportive camaraderie with an intimate cohort of fellow writers, featuring monthly manuscript assessments and online craft lessons, beginning and ending with two week-long fall residencies at Craigardan, a mountainside retreat for artists, makers & thinkers in the majestic Adirondacks of upstate New York.
Led by internationally acclaimed novelist & teacher of writers Kate Moses (Wintering: A Novel of Sylvia Plath), a founding senior editor & staff writer at Salon and former senior acquisitions editor at North Point Press, Bookgardan provides writers with professional expertise, structure, and nurturing guidance to cultivate their works-in-progress over a year, with the goal of significant development & refinement by the end of the program.
The opening residency provides enrolled writers with the tools and insights to sustain their writing for over a year, in a supportive community with their cohort. Writers will make 11 scheduled manuscript submissions followed by video conferencing with Kate and will participate online in craft lessons, seminar-style discussions, Q&As with guest writers and publishing professionals, and optional workshop exchanges. Each writer will receive a full manuscript evaluation at the end of the program during a culminating residency devoted to individual next steps and protocols for professional writers.
Bookgardan program dates are October 1, 2018, through October 7, 2019, with opening and closing residencies Oct 1-8 2018 and Sept 30-Oct 7 2019. Enrollment is limited to 6-8 writers each year. Writers of literary fiction, creative nonfiction, and mixed genre works at any stage of development are encouraged to apply.
