Responding to Human Rights Issues through the Arts
June 11 – June 17, 2017
Sarah Lawrence College has embarked on an innovative partnership with Mayapple Center for the Arts and Humanities to offer summer programs in the arts and humanities that address contemporary issues within global society. This summer’s program is a one-week creative writing intensive for adults centered around the theme, Responding to Human Rights Issues through the Arts.
The act of writing is an attempt to recognize the world, especially as it becomes increasingly unrecognizable. This workshop treats the writer’s work as a citizen of this world: one that can either suffer from reading the daily news or evoke memories and invent visions of the future. If one’s writing is to survive, it must speak back to it, without creating forcibly political overtones. If one’s writing is to help the world survive, it must be as precise and individual as one’s own experiences.
While writing is often defined as a solitary act, art, like living, thrives on connection and collaboration. Together, we will explore what it means to communicate the complicated experience that is being alive today.
The Mayapple & Sarah Lawrence College Summer Intensive provides a welcoming environment where writers can truly focus on their writing. Participants are encouraged to take creative and intellectual risks and to cross disciplinary boundaries. The workshop is capped at fifteen writers, ensuring that each individual will be heard. Following the daily workshop, participants will have the opportunity to work one-on-one with the instructor. Participants will share their final projects in a reading as a culmination of the workshop.
