Carnegie Museum of Art is arguably the first museum of contemporary art in the United States, collecting the “Old Masters of tomorrow” since the inception of the Carnegie International in 1896, a year after its founding.

The permanent collection of more than 30,000 objects features a broad spectrum of visual arts, including painting and sculpture; prints and drawings; photographs; architectural casts, renderings, and models; decorative arts and design, and film, video, and digital imagery. The museum also houses the archive of nearly 75,000 negatives by photographer Charles “Teenie” Harris.

Free with museum admission 

Gallery activities, audio guides, exploration tables, and drop-in art making, all designed for adults and kids to enjoy together, add up to family fun. Registration is not required for these free activities, and most are available during all open hours. Look for the ARTventures signs to find extra family fun on weekends in a various gallery locations.

Preschool Play Dates

Have creative fun with the preschooler in your life! Explore Carnegie Museum of Art with a fun-filled adventure looking at and learning to make art. With museum teachers as guides, children gain exposure to exceptional works of art and learn to experiment with materials. Watch your child’s creative potential and confidence emerge and learn ways to nurture an appreciation of art.

Note: Child must attend with an accompanying adult.

Saturday Sketchbook: Human Figure
Four Saturdays: October 17 to November 7

10:30 a.m.–12:30 p.m.

Join us on Saturday mornings, drawing with a group of artists your age. Sketch in a different gallery each week, focusing on the human figure. Discover how different artists represent the human form, and experiment on your own with realism to abstraction.
