Hello creative peeps! Got two things to let you know about. Southern California Institute of Architecture (SCI-Arc) has a summer program for those who have of love of building things.
SOUTHERN CALIFORNIA INSTITUTE OF ARCHITECTURE SCI-Arc MAKING + MEANING SUMMER PROGRAM
Making + Meaning is a five-week summer program at the Southern California Institute of Architecture (SCI-Arc) that introduces the principles of architecture through a hands-on transformation of form, scale, and space.
Open to high school graduates over the age of 18, college students, and inspired professionals, Making+Meaning is an introduction to the discipline of architecture as engaged by SCI-Arc’s design culture and community. Students learn fundamental design methods and fabrication techniques as they explore design strategies and experiment with materials.
Making+Meaning also introduces students to a variety of representational media ranging from gesture drawing to descriptive geometry and 3D scanning.
No prior experience in architecture is required. The program derives its strength from the diverse backgrounds of its students. The samples of creative work required to apply serve as a tool to give our faculty insight into the groups’ creative interests.
Students are immersed in an intensive studio atmosphere where material exploration and model-making techniques are introduced early on as means to visualize and test three-dimensional ideas. Students also learn to create two-dimensional drawings and representations to help explore spatial composition.
In studio, students learn to balance their artistic creativity with the need to clearly present their work to a jury of architects and peers. With a faculty to student ratio of 1:12, the program seeks to provide thoughtful and engaged mentorship throughout the development of creative work.
The studio curriculum is supported by a series of focused seminars exploring technology and fabrication techniques, architecture history and critical thinking, design methodology and contemporary architectural production. Details and highlights include:
- Design Laboratory
- Visual Studies Laboratory
- Resources & Facilities
- Exploring Los Angeles
- Visual Architects
- Portfolio Development
- Project Development
- Group Exhibition & Final Presentation
- Certificate of Completion
